Laramie may have been a beautiful place. The people there might have been friendly. It may have just seemed like any other town in America. The University of Wyoming is located there, a city population of near 27,000. Laramie was a place I had never heard of before, until Matthew Shephard was killed there October 12, 1998. I watched The Laramie Project for the first time last night and was once again reminded of the hate many people possess in their souls. I don’t remember where I was the day I heard of this terrible crime against an innocent young man, I don’t remember whether I saw it on the news or whether I read in a newspaper. I do remember the pain my heart felt because hate crimes are a rude reality in American life. In this case, it was because Matthew was gay, in other cases it is because of race, or gender or age. The world will never be able to just get along. I just pray no one I know ever has to deal with anything like this. Well, not just anyone I know, anyone who is living…we just shouldn’t have to deal with crimes like this in our lives…
